The Maelstrom of Hooves

A Mingghan-u Noyan of the Golden Horde closes his eyes in the time before men had risen from apes and opens them to the city of the seven hills in its prime. His name was Dagun. One of his officers, Aelius, gave a prayer to his gods before the battle, and spoke of how lovely it was to defend his first home with the Horde. Some of his men had never seen the city alive, some had seen it dead and used for reminiscing on the past, and some had never even heard of it before. He was not alone with his thousand men regiment, as he looked into the distance and saw others appear out of nothing but the air. The Khan had ordered complete and utter destruction of the ones who had taken it upon themselves to try and fully consume the empire he was building.

They were witches, powered by the blood that they spilled. They sacrificed the men of war and sent the women to command battle in their place. It was not an unseen thing to him, traveling throughout time as he had to combat them, but it was still odd to his sensibilities to see their forces entirely commanded by women. He ceased his pondering and looked out into the distance, stroking the mane of his horse before the inevitable combat.

He spares a glance back to Aelius and speaks in the Roman tongue. He found it oddly useful for communication throughout a large span of time they traversed. "Are the men prepared?" He asked. Aelius called back a simple affirmation of their readiness, and Dagun stared back out into the distance. He would see the Witches' beasts when they came close to the city, and his men would destroy them.

Hours passed until the Witches came forth to battle.

Their beasts scratched their backs against the sky, and the ground seemed to shake.
