A click of a pen, the noise of lead making faint lines, before an eraser came in and scrubbed it all away. Then again, and again, and again. Eventually the pencil was set down next to the cel sheet, and a deep exhale came from the artist.

Oak leaned back, finally giving their spine a rest. Their effort laid bare before them:

“I DON’T”

“KNOW WHAT”

“TO DRAW”

[This would be a really good spot for an image]

“Ugh!” Their hands shot to their hair and pulled, a sharp pain stopping them from tearing the strands out.

“Hey buddy,” a gravely voice glided from a man whose shirt stretched taut against his belly as he leaned over the small divider keeping the desks separate, “You’re makin’ quite the ruckus here Oak. Spill ink on your pages again?”

“No. Just can’t figure out what the damn villain should look like,” Oak sighed, gesturing to the used-up paper. “Got any ideas for me, Ben?”

The man let out a hum, his stubby fingers tapping his wrinkled chin, “Why not do an evil wizard or king?”

“Because that’s been done thousands of times before, and the main character is already a warlock. Hit me with another.”

Ben’s face squashed as his eyebrows came together, “A… An evil queen!”

Their hands went to their face, dragging their eyelids down until the bright red of flesh could be seen. “Oh my God.”

“Don’t use the Lord’s name in vain.” Ben said, being dignified only a glare from Oak in response. “Okay well, I got nothin’. Sorry.”

Oak picked the pencil back up, spinning it like a helicopter’s rotor blades. “It’s, whatever. You got your own work anyways,” The pencil stopped. “What are you working on?”

“Inbetweenin’ some scenes.”

“Right.” The wait to see if Ben would say anything else was filled with small sniffles from another worker further down the desks, and an overwhelming silence. Oak stood up quickly, sliding the chair they were on back. “I’m going to go take a hike. Get some ideas outside, or something.”

Oak dodged between bodies in the tight halls of the studio, making their way towards the reflective doors that led outside. They were just about to make it out, when a smaller woman with short curly hair suddenly stepped in their way with wide arms.

“Oak! How’s it going?” Rachel was a burst of energy as always.

“Hey,” Oak said, “Sorry, I’m trying to go out.. If you could just?”

The artist attempted to bend around Rachel, their breath still. She grabbed their arm before they could fully slip away, her slender fingers wrapping their skin. “Don’t leave! I heard you was working with Vance, and I really, really wanna know you've got!” Her voice rang high in a plea.

“Sure, yeah. Can’t you just see the notes for it?” Oak raised an eyebrow at the woman.

“Uh… I suppose? But, I’m curious what you got cooking for the new villain? Vance said she gave all the power to you! Which is,” She paused with eyes darting around the room. “rare for her!”

The artist looked down at her, they took a deep breath of stale air, “Sorry but, I don’t really have anything yet. Which is why…” They gestured towards the exit.

“You’re leaving work in the middle of a project?”

“No! I’m– I’m trying to get some fresh air and some inspiration,” Oak swiftly corrected.

“Ohhh, artblock,” Rachel guessed, she moved away from Oak intertwining her hands behind her back. “I can help you brainstorm a bit?”

Oak’s head tilted. “That… wouldn’t be an awful idea. Let’s go then.”

As their shoes squeaked against the tile floor with each step, the animator behind them looked to get nervous. “Ah. Uhm. Actually, do you think we could do it at my desk?”

“Your desk?” They stopped and turned towards her again.

Rachel tittered. “I’m… a tad behind on some work, so…”

“And you still offered to help me with my work?”

“Couldn't say no.”

Oak put their hands on their face once again, muffling their voice. “Can we make it quick?”

“Course!” Rachel said, grabbing their hands and pulling them further from the doors. “It ain't far!~”

The table was overflowing with papers, sticky-notes, and broken pencils. In the corner of the cubicle was a stack of old coffee cups that leaned precariously to one side; Rachel carefully positioned a newer cup on the stack, then swept everything to one side of the desk to give herself room to draw. “So, we need a villain!”

Oak watched as she grabbed a few cel sheets from the mess and an unbroken pencil, “A villain for something a bit more fantasy? Ben said something about a wizard or a queen, but…” They shrugged.

“Don't feel it? Okay!” She pressed her tongue to the inside of her cheek as a circle appeared on the page. “Some kind of animal maybe?”

“I don’t know what animal I would even do.”

Oak’s torso angled back, their posture closed while grazing the work the other animators in the stuffy room were doing. A scrawnier worker was flipping through drawings of group of characters standing near eachother. “Sorry, are you guys working on the first Wendel the Warlock episode? You’re already at that stage?”

Rachel had finished her first frame and flicked the sheets consistently while drawing the next. “Pipeline goes quick! Probably why Vance is on ya' about the extra design.”

“I wish it was as easy as just drawing a villain out,” Oak said.

“I get that! The villain is for the tower right?” Rachel hummed.

The artist nodded.

“Okay!” The animator leaned back in her chair, pointing her pencil to Oak. “What about something that can, burn or drown the main characters when they go up the thing?”

Oak’s face scrunched inwards. “That’s,” Their eyes widened marginally, a small smile playing on their lips. “Actually the obvious answer, yeah. I don’t know why I didn’t think about that.”

“Because you're overthinking! I doubt anyone cares if it's the obvious choice or not, long as it gets done.”

[look I swear I will add something here to bridge these two parts, but I can’t think of a natural way to do it so uhuhuhu…]

Oak fell onto the bench, the sun warm against their skin and the smell of freshly cut grass brought a tranquil silence to their mind. The conversation with Rachel sat with them, a pressure on their head as they attempted to make all the ideas they had come together. A villain who could attack from the top of the tower, something with fire, but not something that uses magic. The answer felt on the tip of their tongue.

“Trouble?”

An eccentric, but familiar, voice asked right next to Oak. Their head whipped around, spotting Vance sitting on the other end of the bench. “When did.. No, I’m just brainstorming.”

“Brainstorming… due to having trouble.” She repeated, fixing her cloud shaped sunglasses. “You know lying is awfully rude.”

“I was having artblock. I’m about to get over it.” Oak groused.

Vance crossed her legs, the large amount of bangles and circlets on her left wrist clinking against each other when her hand came up to rest on their shoulder.
