I was suddenly in a forest. It felt very familiar, but it was just trees and plants, nothing out of the ordinary, nothing I could look at and recognise. I couldn’t move my body- I couldn’t even look around. It was too quiet- no birds, no people around, just the sound of the wind and the trees. And in front of me was this line of animals walking deeper into the forest. It was crazy- any kind of animal you can think of, all just walking in a line. Tigers and birds and snakes and fucking whales and fish, even. They were just swimming along the ground even though they should have been dying. None of them were making any noise or attacking each other. The line just kept going past me. I swear I saw unicorns and griffins and animals that aren’t real there, too.

My body was moving without me. I couldn’t stop it. I joined the line and kept going along, and I didn’t know how to feel. The whole thing was so bizarre, but there wasn’t anything scary about it, you know? Just weird. Although I did notice one thing- no other humans. Just me.
Anyway, we kept going for a while and then I saw where we were going. It was this big cliff, and there were big metal doors in the side, like a doomsday bunker or something. Every few seconds, the doors would slide open, the animal at the front of the line would walk in, the doors would shut, and then they’d open a few seconds later and I couldn’t see the animal. As I got closer, I saw a sign above the doors. I think it was made of metal, but it was really battered and worn. I think it said ‘CRITTER SANCTUARY’ but I might be wrong, it was really hard to make anything out.
When it was my turn, I walked inside and the doors shut behind me. It looked sort of like a hospital I guess? That same kind of bland feel, endless hallways and everything was off-white and the lights were yellowish and it felt claustrophobic. Except there were no people and no chairs and no plants and no smell of antiseptic and nothing else. Just empty. There was a big electronic sign on the wall across from the doors and when I walked in, it lit up and said ‘Room 7’ and an arrow pointed left.
My body walked left and I heard the doors open behind me. I walked down this long hallway with lots of doors and other hallways coming off it. I could see animals ahead of me in the distance, but they kept going down the hallways or into the rooms. Every so often, I heard something weird- a thud or a gasp or someone humming. I don’t know what that was. I wanted to look in the rooms I walked past, but they didn’t have windows in the doors and I couldn’t make my body move. And it took way too long to get to Room 7. You’d think it’d be pretty close but it took forever.

I finally got to Room 7 and my body walked inside. It looked like a doctor’s office but there wasn’t an exam table or anything, and it had cupboards and counters but there was nothing on them. There was a pile of empty plastic tubs in one corner and a weird hatch thing on one wall. I waited there for a bit and then the door opened and two doctors walked in, but they were wrong.
Like… they looked like someone tried to mix the animatronics from Chuck E Cheese with taxidermy. The horrible stiff dead look of taxidermy animals, but human-sized and with human bodies. Everything about them was wrong. One of them was a koala, but koalas don’t have humanoid bodies or ribs or walk on two legs or have feet that go forward, you know? And the eyes were so empty. The other one was a horse, and that was worse- it looked like whoever taxidermied it had broken some of the bones and moved them around inside it, to make it walk upright on two legs and have shoulders and a skeleton like a human. Horses aren’t supposed to walk like that, man. They’re not supposed to look like that. They were both wearing stiff white shirts and nurse caps like in old movies. They moved around, but their bodies jerked and started like robots.
They looked at me, and even though their faces didn’t move, I just KNEW that they were disgusted. Like half of it was like they were thinking ‘What the fuck are you doing here?’, like I was some dipshit freshman who’d gone to a frat party when I wasn’t invited and would never be invited. And the other half was like they were thinking ‘Oh my God, is this the best we can do? This is what we’re stuck with?’ They kept staring at me for a while, and I felt kinda shitty even though I didn’t know what the fuck was going on, and then it was like they accepted that they were stuck with me. They looked at each other, and then the koala opened a cupboard and took out these two long knives. It gave one to the horse and they started cutting me up.

I don’t know why, but I wasn’t afraid. It didn’t hurt. There was no blood. I just stood there watching while they kept slicing bits off me, and I could still feel them as the bits fell to the floor. They did each finger, then the rest of my hand, then my arm in halves, and you get the idea. After a bit, they stopped and started picking up bits of me and looking at them. IDK how, the horse still had hooves, but it did. Most of my bits got thrown into that weird hatch on the wall, but they kept some and put them in the tubs. And I kind of felt… good? Grateful? Glad, I guess, that at least some of me was OK.
Because that was the point, I think? Like, that’s what all of us were there for. We’re all just parts and they took us apart so they could use the good bits of us. And I watched them cut me up and I didn’t scream, I was just happy that some of me could be used. They cut me into a pile of bits and even if most of me was shit some of me could be saved. They put my head in the hatch, and then I snapped out of it, I guess. And that’s it.
