It sounds fucked up when I say it aloud, but my family never celebrated birthdays when I was a kid. Complicated religious bullshit I don't wanna get into right now. Still, they did believe in making sure my birthdays were always some degree of special, so every year they had a system: first we'd walk down to the Playplace near our apartment for lunch, then they'd give me a flat 30 bucks to spend on whatever I wanted at Target. Toys and candy are great, but what I was most excited to look at every year were the DVDs. My family didn't have basic cable back then, so as a product of the early 2000s, my childhood was practically built on shiny circles.

On my 7th Birthday trip, I found myself with only enough money to buy 1 DVD, and I was forced to make a decision: SpongeBob's "Sea Stories" or Wendel the Warlock's "Den of Beasts". My parents persuaded me I'd get more enjoyment out of SpongeBob, but the cover of the Wendel DVD stuck out in my mind: I remember it had this big, imposing dragon on it, emerging from a cave and looming over Wendel and his friends as they steeled themselves to take it on. They all had this serious, life-or-death look in their eyes, but the cover was plastered with all manner of bright, saturated colors; the dragon was lime green, for crying out loud! IDK, just a funny juxtaposition in my mind.

Anyway, we went home with Sea Stories, and it was nautical nonsense for me, but for whatever reason the image of that Wendel DVD wouldn't leave my head. I couldn't tell you what it was, whether it was child brain getting attached to pretty colors or just a case of the 'ol gimmies, but I really wanted to find that DVD again and watch it. Normally I'd go through my school friends for this kind of thing, since they tended to pick up the cool kid things that I was too indecisive/scared to. One of those friends - we'll call her "Clair" - did indeed pick up the DVD instead of me, as I discovered when I next visited her house for a playdate. We got distracted with other stuff to watch it that day, tho, and her family wound up losing most of their DVDs in a house fire before we could have another playdate. Yeah, not really paranormal; I just don't know where else to talk about this. The DVD was destroyed in a fire right after I decided not to get it, I guess?

Really? Mayhaps there were other DVDs you coveted more than this one?

No shit? Aw man, I LOVED Wendel the Warlock as a kid, couldn't get enough of it! Watched a lot of cartoons in general as a kid, so many I could tell the other kids on the playground the exact plot details of whatever episodes I had most recently watched. This one time I brought up a dragon episode to one of them, but they had no idea what I was talking about, so I invited one of them to my home to show them what I meant, but the DVD that had the episode suddenly didn't have it anymore, like it was just gone entirely. Felt very embarrassed after that.

May we change the subject, please? I'm not quite fond of Dragons, myself.

I believe I have a similar story; might I share it with all of you?

RDRR 11/20/17 (Mon) 21:41:21 #13949485

Fuck, I remember that too! Where the dragon was shooting fire down at the main characters? There has to be videos of it online somewhere.

user-9 11/20/17 (Mon) 21:41:19 #13949484

Is this truly the best you can muster for a tale of the paranormal? I've seen scores more unsettling than this.

user-9 11/20/17 (Mon) 21:41:19 #13949484

Do pay attention to what I have to say; my stories are far superior than anything these peons can achieve.

RDRR 11/20/17 (Mon) 21:41:21 #13949485

Respectfully, 9, please shut up.
